Religious Culture and Ethics

🎯 What Will We Learn in This Unit?

  • Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation
  • Religious Expressions Used in Wishes and Prayers
  • Getting to Know a Prayer: The Subhanaka Prayer and Its Meaning
  • Reviewing What We've Learned
  • Expanded Glossary of Concepts

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (1/9)

  • These expressions appear in almost every moment of daily life: when starting a task, receiving a blessing, meeting someone, or noticing a mistake we've made... Each one has its own occasion for use and its own spiritual meaning.

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (2/9)

  • 📿 Basmala — "Bismillahirrahmanirrahim"
Meaning: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." It is said when starting a meal, a lesson, a task, or a journey. Tasks begun with the Basmala are believed to become blessed and good. This is why our Prophet advised us to begin every good deed with the Basmala.

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (3/9)

  • 🙏 Hamd (Praise) — "Alhamdulillah"
Meaning: "All praise and thanks belong to Allah." It is said when we receive a blessing, good news, or success, in order to praise Allah and thank Him. Giving praise helps us appreciate the value of what we have.

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (4/9)

  • 💚 Gratitude — "Allah'a şükür" (Thanks be to Allah)
Meaning: expressing gratitude for the blessings Allah has given us. Gratitude is not just something spoken aloud; it also means using a blessing properly and sharing it with others.

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (5/9)

  • 🤝 Greeting — "As-salamu alaykum" / "Wa alaykumu s-salam"
Meaning: "May Allah's peace/safety be upon you." This is an expression of love and peace that Muslims say to one another when they meet. Our Prophet recommended spreading the greeting of peace as a practice that increases love among people.

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (6/9)

  • 🕌 Takbir — "Allahu Akbar"
Meaning: "Allah is the Greatest." It is said to declare Allah's greatness and supremacy. It is an expression we hear often at the start of and during prayer, in the call to prayer, and during religious holidays.
  • 🌙 Salawat — "Allahumma salli ala sayyidina Muhammad"
Meaning: to pray for our Prophet, offering him love and respect. Reciting salawat whenever the Prophet's name is mentioned shows our devotion to him.

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (7/9)

  • 😔 Seeking Forgiveness — "Astaghfirullah"
Meaning: "I seek forgiveness from Allah." It is said when we accidentally say something wrong, make a mistake, or feel regret, to ask Allah's forgiveness. Seeking forgiveness reminds us that we must learn from our mistakes and try to correct ourselves.

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (8/9)

  • ✨ Glorification — "Subhanallah"
Meaning: "I declare Allah free from all imperfection." It is said to express that Allah can have no flaw and to declare His majesty; it is also often said in the face of astonishing beauty.

📌 Religious Expressions in Everyday Conversation (9/9)

  • Did you know? When beginning to read the Qur'an, we say "A'udhu billahi mina'sh-shaytani'r-rajim" (I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan). When someone sneezes and says "Alhamdulillah," they are answered with "Yarhamukallah" (May Allah have mercy on you); that person then responds with "Yahdikumullah."

🤔 Did You Know?

Why do we say "Alhamdulillah" when we sneeze, and why do those around us say "Yarhamukallah"? This tradition of mutual prayer comes from the sunnah of our Prophet.

📌 Religious Expressions Used in Wishes and Prayers (1/3)

  • A prayer (dua) is when a servant turns to Allah to ask Him for something, to plead with Him, and to open their heart. When we make good wishes for our loved ones, we are really asking Allah for something on their behalf. That is why we use many "wish expressions" in our daily life:

📌 Religious Expressions Used in Wishes and Prayers (2/3)

  • May Allah grant healing — Said to someone who is ill, wishing them a swift recovery.
  • Go in Allah's safekeeping — Said to someone setting off on a journey, wishing that their path and themselves be under Allah's protection.
  • InshaAllah — Means "if Allah permits/wills"; it is said when speaking of something we hope will happen in the future. This phrase reminds us that everything happens by Allah's permission.
  • May Allah be pleased with you — Said to thank someone who has done us a kindness or helped us.
  • Amin — Means "So be it, accept it, O Allah." It is said together by everyone at the end of a prayer, wishing for that prayer to be accepted.
  • May Allah grant abundance — Said to wish someone abundance in their earnings, efforts, or home.
  • May it be good for you (Hayırlı olsun) — Said to someone moving into a new home, starting a new job, or acquiring something new.
  • May Allah make it easy — Said to wish strength and ease to someone undertaking a difficult task.
  • May Allah have mercy on them — Said when a deceased person is remembered, asking Allah's mercy for them.

📌 Religious Expressions Used in Wishes and Prayers (3/3)

  • Let's not forget: When we use these expressions, we are not just saying words; we are also sincerely praying for the person in front of us. That is why we should say these words from the heart.

❌ Common Misconceptions

❌ Some people think saying "InshaAllah" is a vague expression meaning "maybe it will happen, maybe it won't."

✅ In fact, "InshaAllah" expresses our belief that everything happens by Allah's permission, with a firm sense of trust in Him (tawakkul).

📌 Getting to Know a Prayer: The Subhanaka Prayer and Its Meaning (1/3)

  • 🕋 سُبْحَانَكَ اَللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالٰى جَدُّكَ وَلاَ اِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ — Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa tabaraka ismuka wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghayruk.

📌 Getting to Know a Prayer: The Subhanaka Prayer and Its Meaning: Word-by-word meaning

  • Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika — "O Allah! You are free of all imperfection, I always glorify and praise You as such."
  • wa tabaraka ismuka — "Your name is blessed."
  • wa ta'ala jadduka — "Your being and majesty are above all things."
  • wa la ilaha ghayruk — "There is no god but You."

📌 Getting to Know a Prayer: The Subhanaka Prayer and Its Meaning (3/3)

  • When is it recited? The Subhanaka prayer is recited right after standing for prayer and saying the opening (iftitah) takbir, before beginning to recite the Qur'an. That is why this prayer can also be called "the key to the prayer (salah)."
  • Why is it important? With the Subhanaka prayer, we begin our salah by praising and exalting Allah and remembering that there is no god but Him. This prayer prepares our hearts for worship and renews our devotion to Allah.

🌍 A Real-Life Example

When a friend gets a high grade on an exam and says "Alhamdulillah, I'm so happy!", it shows both that they appreciate the value of their success and that they are celebrating it by thanking Allah.

💭 Think and Answer

Which religious expression do you think we use most often in daily life? Why do we use this expression so often?

These expressions appear in almost every moment of daily life: when starting a task, receiving a blessing, meeting someone, or noticing a mistake we've made... Each one has its own occasion for use and its own spiritual meaning.

📿 Basmala — "Bismillahirrahmanirrahim"

Meaning: "All praise and thanks belong to Allah." It is said when we receive a blessing, good news, or success, in order to praise Allah and thank Him. Giving praise helps us appreciate the value of what we have.

💚 Gratitude — "Allah'a şükür" (Thanks be to Allah)

🤝 Greeting — "As-salamu alaykum" / "Wa alaykumu s-salam"
Meaning: "May Allah's peace/safety be upon you." This is an expression of love and peace that Muslims say to one another when they meet. Our Prophet recommended spreading the greeting of peace as a practice that increases love among people.

🕌 Takbir — "Allahu Akbar"
Meaning: "Allah is the Greatest." It is said to declare Allah's greatness and supremacy. It is an expression we hear often at the start of and during prayer, in the call to prayer, and during religious holidays.

🌙 Salawat — "Allahumma salli ala sayyidina Muhammad"

2️⃣ Religious Expressions Used in Wishes and Prayers

A prayer (dua) is when a servant turns to Allah to ask Him for something, to plead with Him, and to open their heart. When we make good wishes for our loved ones, we are really asking Allah for something on their behalf. That is why we use many "wish expressions" in our daily life:

  • InshaAllah — Means "if Allah permits/wills"; it is said when speaking of something we hope will happen in the future. This phrase reminds us that everything happens by Allah's permission.
  • May Allah be pleased with you — Said to thank someone who has done us a kindness or helped us.

Let's not forget: When we use these expressions, we are not just saying words; we are also sincerely praying for the person in front of us.

3️⃣ Getting to Know a Prayer: The Subhanaka Prayer and Its Meaning

سُبْحَانَكَ اَللّٰهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالٰى جَدُّكَ وَلاَ اِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ

Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa tabaraka ismuka wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghayruk.

Word-by-word meaning:

  • Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika — "O Allah! You are free of all imperfection, I always glorify and praise You as such."
  • wa tabaraka ismuka — "Your name is blessed."
  • wa ta'ala jadduka — "Your being and majesty are above all things."
  • wa la ilaha ghayruk — "There is no god but You."

When is it recited? The Subhanaka prayer is recited right after standing for prayer and saying the opening (iftitah) takbir, before beginning to recite the Qur'an. That is why this prayer can also be called "the key to the prayer (salah)."

Why is it important? With the Subhanaka prayer, we begin our salah by praising and exalting Allah and remembering that there is no god but Him. This prayer prepares our hearts for worship and renews our devotion to Allah.

🌍 A Real-Life Example

When a friend gets a high grade on an exam and says "Alhamdulillah, I'm so happy!", it shows both that they appreciate the value of their success and that they are celebrating it by thanking Allah.

⚖️ Moral Dilemma — What Would You Do?

When a friend gives you some news, you say "Alhamdulillah" out of habit, but at that moment you don't actually feel grateful at all — you just say it because everyone else does. Would it be more right to stop using this expression altogether, or to keep using it even without feeling it and try to grow into its meaning over time?
